Lee Point Road Upgrade
Lee Point Road Upgrade – September Update
Lord Mayor Katrina Fong Lim and NT Minister for Transport Peter Styles officially opened the duplicated section of Lee Point Road on Thursday 25 September.
The Lord Mayor said upgrading our roads ensures Darwin is well placed to manage the challenges of a growing city and economy.
“The duplication of Lee Point Road helps meet the needs of our community and delivers better connections with Darwin’s new and existing suburbs, the hospital and the city,” said the Lord Mayor.
The major sub-arterial road duplication was funded through City of Darwin’s Developer Contribution Plan with an additional $5 million from the Northern Territory Government.
“The co-funded project demonstrates the shared vision Council and the Northern Territory Government have for increasing opportunity for Darwin,” she added.
Long term environmental considerations were a factor in the design of the road upgrade, and LED street lights have been installed on Lee Point Road.
“Council is progressively using environmentally sustainable technologies and I am delighted to see LED lights included in this project,” said the Lord Mayor.
NT Minister for Transport Peter Styles said the completion of works will improve safety for vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
“The Giles government takes safety on our roads very seriously and we are committed to doing all we can to achieve this,” Mr Styles said.
“The upgrade of the Lee Point Road is a major project that the government committed $5 million towards, in a joint effort with the City of Darwin.”
“The northern suburbs are rapidly developing and with new suburbs such as Muirhead and Lyons, and the 300 room motel development that is part of the Lee Point Resort, traffic volume will continue to increase.”
City of Darwin carried out extensive community consultation with residents and stakeholders, before and during the major works.
“We are pleased the views of the community affected by the upgrade of the road have been heard and have led to a great result for everyone involved,” said the Lord Mayor.
