Smith Street Mall is the central hub of the central business district (CBD) where locals and visitors can shop for Aboriginal art, locally made jewellery and tropical clothing then enjoy the cool ambience relaxing at one of the many al fresco cafes. Shady Raintree Park at the northern end is popular with tourists and locals at lunchtime and many outdoor events are held there during the dry season.
Halfway down the Mall is one of Darwin’s oldest pubs, the Victoria Hotel, a landmark and heritage building. Opposite is the Star Village Arcade, which used to house the old open-air Star Theatre.
The stucco arched façade of the former Commercial Bank now graces the Paspaley Pearls building, the world renowned company specialising in the cultivation and sale of quality south sea pearls.
Follow the historical information plaques up the Mall and learn some interesting facts about the “Great hurricane” that struck Darwin in 1897, the arrival of the first Chinese people in 1874, and the discovery of pearl shell in Darwin harbour in 1884.
