Dog registration
You need to register your dog once it is three months old. Failure to do so may result in the dog being seized by Council or you being summonsed to appear in court for the offence of keeping an unregistered dog.
A seized unregistered dog will only be released from the Pound upon payment of registration and a $200 release fee. Seized dogs are only held at the pound for four working days. Payment for registration may be made at the Civic Centre (at the cashier's desk) or at Darwin's Australia Post Offices. Ensuring that your dog is wearing a registration tag provides immediate identification if your pet is lost or injured and enables the dog to be returned easily. Registration also enables Council to assist in dog control generally.
Remember to notify Council of the death, loss or change of address of your dog.
To transfer the registration of a dog, the new owner must complete an application form and return it to Council. Application forms are available by clicking on the link below. Alternatively, forms can be obtained from Customer Service, Civic Centre, the Public Libraries or by phoning 8930 0606 and we will mail you one.
De-sexing is encouraged and registering a de-sexed dog is very much cheaper than registering an entire dog. When registering a de-sexed dog the appropriate certification must be available.
