Darwin City Council Libraries host a variety of programs and events for library patrons of all ages and are free. These are advertised within the libraries and through the media.
Book Alive - 50 Books You Can't Put Down
Books Alive is Australia’s largest annual promotion of books and reading. It is an Australian Government initiative developed through the Australia Council for the Arts.
Internationally bestselling Crime Writer Michael Robotham is coming to Darwin as the 2008 Ambassador for Books Alive. He will be promoting the reading guide '50 Books You Can't Put Down' and his new thriller Bombproof which is available free with any book purchased from the guide until the end of August.
Meet and hear Michael Robotham at Casuarina Library at 6.30pm on Thursday 14 August. The event is free but bookings are essential. Please phone 89 300 200 for bookings and information.

Book Clubs
If you are passionate about discussing books and would like to meet once a month with some like-minded souls, Darwin City Council Libraries have 5 book clubs to choose from.
Casuarina and City Libraries’ evening groups meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 6.00pm. Enjoy a glass of wine and settle back for some lively chats over popular titles and authors.
For those who only have an hour to spare out of a busy day, our popular lunchtime book clubs may be for you. Bring your lunch and we will supply coffee and juice. Casuarina Library’s group meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 1.00pm, and the City Library meets on the last Thursday at 12.00noon.
Still at school? Casuarina Library has a book club especially for youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years. It is held on the second Wednesday of the month at 4.00pm.

Learning Living Leisure @ your library
Are you having trouble keeping up with technology? Do you need to brush up your knowledge of the internet but don't know how?
Darwin City Council Libraries are running a variety of computer programs designed for people to learn new skills using the internet. Whether you know absolutely nothing about computers or want to learn something more advanced, our library staff can book you into a session that suits you.
We are offering:
Basic Internet
Learn the basics of using a web browser to visit websites and explore the internet.
Basic Email
Once you are familiar with the basics of using a web browser, and exploring the internet, learn to set up an email account, and use email to keep in touch with friends and family.
Want to learn more?
Those who attend our email and internet classes are also invited to join our Internet Club where you can practice new new skills with the supervision and assistance of one of our friendly library staff.

Adult learners week
- Adult Learners’ Week is held throughout Australia during September and is designed to promote the benefits of learning – in the home, at work and in the community.
- Our libraries contribute to the week conducting sessions that assist and facilitate lifelong learning.
Author visits and book launches
- Periodically held for all ages.
Kids Reading Oz Choice (KROC) awards
- Provides young readers the opportunity to vote for their favourite Australian book.
- Relevant publicity and voting cards are distributed to all public and school libraries in the NT.

Library & Information Week aims to raise the profile of libraries and information service professionals in Australia.

In May every year, the libraries showcase their resources and services through different programs and events targeted to a cross-section of the community.

In 2008, National Simultaneous Storytime returns to LIW. Libraries are for everyone - including, of course, children! This popular event on Wednesday 21 May highlights the importance of books, reading and literacy for children, as well as promoting storytime activities in public libraries.
Whats Happening
Seniors month
Seniors Month is held in August every year in the Northern Territory and enables people and organisations to work together to promote active ageing whilst encouraging a positive understanding of ageing in the community. Darwin City Council has programmed a variety of fun and interesting activities to be held during August 2008 for Seniors Month.

Young Territory Author (YTA) awards
- An annual writing competition for young people in the Northern Territory aged 18 years and under.
- Entry forms available in all public and school libraries.
- Entries close 30 June each year with presentations taking place during Children’s Book Week in August.
