Overview - Climate Change and Environment

City of Darwin has a strong focus on looking after Darwin’s natural environment. Working with all levels of government and the community, Council is committed to achieving long-term ecologically and culturally sustainable development within the Darwin municipality through planning and community consultation.

Big Picture

City of Darwin’s Climate Change and Environment team is responsible for the development and delivery of Council policies and initiatives on climate change, biodiversity, sustainability and other environmental and climate change related issues.

In 2011 Council developed the City of Darwin Climate Change Action Plan 2011-2020. This plan is a combination of mitigation and adaptation initiatives to be undertaken both internally at Council and throughout the community.

Inspire, Inform and Involve

Part of our role is to let our community know of all the great things they can do to help protect our environment and tackle climate change. This includes taking part in global events such as Earth Hour and Plastic Free July. It also includes engaging with schools to let them know how they can help through activities such as tree planting, and supporting local community groups through the provision of Climate Change & Environment grants
