City of Darwin received interest from Guangzhou Municipal Government to enter into a friendship city in 2019, and it is the extended cooperation base on the Letter of Intent with Yuexiu District, Guangzhou, China that was established on 29 November 2018. Lord Mayor The Hon. Kon Vatskalis signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Mayor Guohui Wen on 25 October 2019 in Guangzhou.

 

City Profile

Guangzhou is part of the Greater Bay Area and is about 40 minutes away from Shenzhen via bullet train. The distance from Guangzhou CBD to Guangzhou Airport is equal to the distance to Shenzhen Airport. Guangzhou is the capital and most populous city of the province of Guangdong in southern China and one of China's three largest cities.

It's located on the Pearl River about 120 km north-northwest of Hong Kong and 145 km north of Macau, Guangzhou has a history of over 2,300 years and was a major part of the maritime Silk Road, and continues to serve as a major port and transportation hub.

Guangzhou's GDP in the first quarter of 2019 was $114.75 billion, increased by 7.5% in the same period of last year. Guangzhou is growing at a higher rate than the national average, 1.8%, and 1.1% higher respectively. Fixed asset investment increased by 19.1%, total retail sales of consumer goods increased by 7.7%, and cross-border e-commerce imports and exports increased by 25.5%, of which exports increased by 3.1 times.
