Nominations Now Open – 2021 Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year Awards

Media Release
25 May 2020

Nominations are now open for the annual Australia Day Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year Awards.

In their 40th year, the Awards are an opportunity to recognise people in our community who make a real difference - role models in our community, people who go above and beyond to improve the lives of others, are quiet achievers or leaders in our community.

“These awards are a great opportunity to acknowledge selfless individuals whose efforts make a difference in other people’s lives and make our community a better place,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

“I want to see people who go above and beyond for our community to get the recognition they deserve.”

“I encourage everyone to nominate a person in the community, it is a real boost to be recognised for the work you do,” Lord Mayor Vatskalis concluded.

“The past 12 months, in particular, have been challenging - with significant bushfires interstate and COVID-19 restrictions alone many people have really stepped up to support their community and in fact make a real difference on the national stage.”

Anyone can nominate – friends, family, colleagues, clients, customers or individuals and organisations can nominate themselves of their event. An individual or event only needs to be nominated once to enter.

Award categories are Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year, which is open to those aged 16 and under 30 on January 26, 2021; and Community Event of the Year, which is awarded to the most outstanding event held in the preceding year.

City of Darwin has simplified the on-line nomination process and is providing additional phone support if needed.

“We will have people on stand-by during work hours to provide assistance if needed,” said Lord Mayor Vatskalis.

Nominations close on 26 November 2020, with winners announced on 21 January and official presentations made on Australia Day at the Citizenship Ceremony on 26 January 2021.
