Works Start on Lakeside Drive Upgrade

Media Release
05 November 2018

Reconstruction and resurfacing works begin today at Lakeside Drive, Alawa.

Lakeside Drive was built in 1968 and is now 50 years old. Ongoing assessments have identified that the road surface and a portion of the underlying road base is in need of improvement. Stage One of works extends along Lakeside Drive from Trower Road to Stasinowsky Street.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said that the works are part of Council’s commitment to maintain our extensive network of roads.

“Council looks after more than 450 kilometres of local roads and we aim to provide a network that meets the comfort, safety and expectations of all road users and the community as a whole,” said Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

“Further improvements to Lakeside Drive will include upgrades to the pedestrian and bicycle crossing points which will enhance the roadway for all users,” he added.

Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works with detours, including temporary bus stops and bus detours.

Road users and pedestrians are advised to comply with the change in traffic conditions. Motorists are also advised that there will be unavoidable delays and should plan their journey accordingly.

“Council is working with residents, businesses, road users and other stakeholders to minimise disruption during the necessary upgrade,” said the Lord Mayor.

The works are being jointly funded by City of Darwin and the Australian Governments Roads to Recovery Program.

Stage One works are expected to be complete by the end of January 2019.
