State Square Underground Car Park

Home / About Council / Transforming Darwin / Completed projects / State Square Underground Car Park

State Square Underground Car Park is an NT Government Project.

The new State Square Car Park is open for parking from Friday 31 January 2020, as part of the Civic and State Square Master Plan developed by the Northern Territory Government. Construction took 18 months to complete, and existing precinct car park users will transition from February 2020.

This is the first underground car park of its kind in Darwin, where green space will be created above the concrete.  The facility houses 450 car parks including approximately 150 car parks for public use and has a dual role as a Cyclone Shelter with the ability to shelter 600 people. The car park is fitted with solar panels which will offset most of the electricity used.

By moving the existing car parking underground, more space has been created within the State Square precinct for landscaping, walkways, cycle paths, shade, cooling water features and relaxation / social areas.

While the facility will remain an asset of the NT Government, City of Darwin will operate the car park under an interim arrangement transitioning to a full management agreement as soon as possible.

The Northern Territory Government and City of Darwin are committed to transforming Darwin’s CBD into a tropical, world-renowned destination, boosting tourism and enhancing Darwin’s liveability.
