Home / About Council / Transforming Darwin / Projects / Key Projects / Lakeside Drive Upgrade

Lakeside Drive built in 1968 is 50 years old and needs reconstruction and resurfacing works. The second and final stage of the Lakeside Drive Upgrade is due to commence on 5 May 2020

Lakeside drive detour update

Lakeside Drive is now in Stage 2… and detours have been reviewed to minimise unsafe driver behaviour through local suburban streets.

The Lakeside Drive detour will now redirect ALL traffic via Trower Road / Dripstone Road.

With kids back at school this week it is more important than ever to avoid cutting through the Alawa suburb unless you are a resident.

Keep yourself and others safe, please:

  • SLOW DOWN
  • SHOW CAUTION
  • FOLLOW THE SIGNAGE

The City of Darwin apologises for any inconvenience caused by the above works, and will endeavour to minimise delays where at all possible.

Lakeside Drive has a high flow of traffic with approximately 6,000 vehicles utilising it daily. The road is accessed by a range of community members including: emergency services, residents/commuters, uni students/lecturers, public transport.

Through ongoing assessment it has been identified that the surface of the road and a portion of the underlying road base is in need of improvement. The project, jointly funded by City of Darwin and the Australian Governments Roads to Recovery Program, will involve removing and replacing the road pavement to a depth of approximately 50cm. Further improvements to Lakeside will include upgrades to the pedestrian and bicycle crossing points which will enhance the roadway for all users.

Stage 1 Completed

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis announced the completion and re-opening of this important infrastructure route.

Stage 1 works, valued at $1.1M, and jointly funded by City of Darwin and the Australian Governments Roads to Recovery Program, was completed in March 2019.

Stage 2 - Due to commence 5 May 2020

The final stage of the project, from Stasinowsky Street to Dripstone Road Roundabout, is expected to be completed in September 2020.

Roadworks will include road resurfacing and upgrades to pedestrian and bicycle crossing points, which will enhance the roadway for all users.

Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works with detours, including temporary bus stops and bus detours.
