Pay and Display

Parking throughout the Darwin Central Business District (CBD) is controlled by parking meters. You should always read all parking signs and understand the zone you have parked in.

Our Pay and Display parking meters are located throughout the CBD. All meters accept coins and some accept credit card and Visa payWave or Mastercard PAYPASS™ payments.

To use these facilities

  • park your vehicle
  • read the sign
  • decide how long you expect to stay
  • pay at the nearest meter
  • you will receive a parking ticket clearly indicating when your parking time is up
  • place the ticket on your vehicle's dashboard, facing up, so it is clearly visible to Council Rangers.

Payments Via Parking Meters

Parking meters do not give change and do not accept 5 cent pieces.

Maximum coins accepted is 25.

Report a Fault

For any parking meter faults please phone Council on the freecall number

1300 661 322

You must then use the nearest available Pay and Display machine.

Credit Card Payments

Credit card and Visa payWave or Mastercard PAYPASS™ payment options have been added at these off-street locations with no additional fees for use:

  • West Lane Car park
  • Darwin Oval Car park
  • McLachlan Street
  • Nichols Place
  • Cavenagh Street.

Credit card or PayWave/PAYPASS™ can also be used at many of the parking meters in Zone C and the eight parking meters in Zone A on Cavenagh Street.

Instructions are displayed on meters with additional signage at all car parks where the electronic payment system is available.

Credit Card Payments Down?

If at any time the credit card payment option is not available, you must still purchase a ticket using coins.

Car Parking Zones and Costs

Loading Zones

Several loading zones are located within the Darwin municipality to assist businesses. They give easy access to business premises and have 15 minute time limits. Loading zones are for goods vehicles only, i.e. vehicles such as trucks, utilities and commercial vans which are primarily designed to transport goods. Sedans, station wagons and various other similar makes and models do not fall into this category. Drivers of non-goods vehicles may obtain a permit to use a loading zone by contacting Council's Customer Service Centre in the Civic Centre on 08 8930 0600. Loading zone permits are valid for a 12 month period.

Parking Time Zones

The parking signs marked 1/4P, 1P, 2P and 3P; refer to 15 minute, 1 hour, 2 hour and 3 hour parking times. They bring us in line with the standards set out by the Australian Road Rules. 1/4P parking is free but 1P, 2P and 3P parking requires drivers to obtain and display a valid Pay and Display parking meter ticket. Parking zones are regularly patrolled by Council Rangers.

ALL parking throughout the CBD on weekends and public holidays is FREE.

Parking Meters

Council parking meters are in operation Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 5.00pm. During these hours drivers are required to have a valid parking ticket displayed on the dashboard of their vehicles.
