G4W Schools

Your school can start creating comfortable and safe habitats by joining our Gardens for Wildlife school program.

Gardens for Wildlife (G4W) gives Darwin Schools the opportunity to transform your grounds into a thriving ecosystem for the local environment. The program offers a range of resources and activities that can be delivered in school around promoting biodiversity. 

Resources include how to guides and booklets such as Creating Habitat for Darwin Gardens.

What You Get as a G4W School

Schools who sign up will receive

  • A welcome pack including factsheets and other useful information such as wildlife rescue and reptile removal phone numbers
  • A set of 10 binoculars
  • 50 graphite pencils (made out of recycled materials)
  • A Gardens for Wildlife sign for your front gate to promote you are part of the program
  • Quarterly newsletters featuring tips and information on the program
  • Access to teaching resources and teaching sessions with in-class experts (based on availability and topic selection)
  • Invitations to attend free workshops, field days and other local community environmental activities

School Membership Details

Gardens for Wildlife membership is free.

Schools that sign up must meet qualification criteria outlined below.

Criteria for Membership

Schools will require an onsite assessment by our staff to look at specific biodiversity criteria.

To qualify for Gardens for Wildlife membership

  • the property must be under your management control
  • the property must have some capacity for native vegetation and/or habitat to be developed within the boundary (but everywhere has potential!)
  • Schools must nominate a lead contact for the G4W program to be responsible for
    • coordinating activities
    • help plan projects
    • be the first point of contact for our G4W team

As a G4W School you must be motivated and committed to supporting nature conservation on your school grounds and managing it in a way that enhances the local environment, as well as educating students on the importance of biodiversity and natural habitats.

Benefits of Joining Gardens for Wildlife

  • You will receive a welcome pack including
    • factsheets and information such as wildlife rescue and reptile removal phone numbers
    • A set of 10 binoculars
    • 50 graphite pencils (made out of recycled materials)
  • A habitat assessment of your school by one of Councils Environment Officers
  • Access to free native flora and fauna management advice (fully aligned to NTG School planting guidelines)
  • Assistance with mapping of your property, and biodiversity planning
  • Advice on revegetation, weed control, pest animal control and ecological processes
  • A Gardens for Wildlife sign for your front gate to promote you are part of the program
  • Quarterly newsletters on upcoming activities you can join in on
  • Free access to all Gardens for Wildlife learning resources and in class sessions
  • Incentives to create improve and protect wildlife habitat (free trees, nest box etc.)
  • Access to G4W grants up to a maximum of $2,500 per year (subject to application guidelines, criteria and assessment);
  • Integration of nature conservation with your learning outcomes
  • Serve as inspiration to the school and broader local community
  • Opportunities to attend free workshops and meet other like-minded schools
