The youth area at Casuarina Library has undergone a colourful transformation thanks to the talents of four emerging artists, under the mentorship of local art legend Caleb Schatz.
The new mural will be unveiled at the Casuarina Library as part of Geektacular on Saturday 20 January 2024.
City of Darwin Acting Chief Executive Officer, Matt Grassmayr, said the mural is a stunning feature that is sure to be well loved by library visitors.
“This is our third mural mentoring project, designed to give young artists, who have experience working at small scale, the opportunity to share their work in a public space while practicing painting larger pieces,” Mr Grassmayr said.
“This initiative not only celebrates the prowess of our emerging artists but also contributes to the visual richness of our community spaces,” he said.
Amber Shepherd, Bethany O'Shea, Ifa Shiddiq and Jarrah Watson were the local artists chosen to work on the project, with Ms Watson saying she was thrilled to be involved:
“Opportunities like these are vital. There’s so much talent here in Darwin,” she said.
The mural project is a collaboration between City of Darwin’s LAUNCH youth program and libraries.
LAUNCH, the umbrella brand used to promote City of Darwin’s youth activities, events and programs, provides young people aged 12 to 25 with high-quality opportunities for active community participation.
“The mural mentoring project aligns with LAUNCH's mission to amplify young people’s voices and highlight the positive contributions young people make to our community,” Mr Grassmayr said.
