Lake Alexander has been temporarily closed due to an isolated area of high bacteria content that was detected in the lake during routine water quality monitoring.
As the current quality of the water in Lake Alexander does not meet the levels required for swimming, the lake has been temporarily closed to swimmers and other water activities whilst further testing is undertaken.
Lake Alexander has its water quality regularly monitored for public safety. Recent rains have washed nutrients into the lake and this, together with recent warmer periods, has reduced the water quality in the lake.
City of Darwin is committed to maintaining the highest environmental practices to protect the community and our environment. Flushing the lake with natural sea water is the best environmental action and will see the lake ready again for swimmers as soon as possible.
The public will be advised when the lake is reopened. Until then, please heed all signs while the water quality testing is being undertaken.
City of Darwin apologises for any inconvenience.
