Kerbside recycling collection delays – Lyons & Leanyer

City of Darwin advises that kerbside recycling collection services in Lyons and Leanyer may be temporarily delayed on Thursday 1 May and Friday 2 May 2025.

Residents are requested to leave their yellow-lid recycling bins on the verge. Collection crews will be working after hours and any streets not serviced will be prioritised for collection on Friday morning.

To assist, please ensure bins remain out until close of business Friday.

We appreciate your understanding as we work to complete all scheduled collections.

Changes to Library access and book drop

Construction of the new Civic Centre building will soon commence. The current Civic Centre carpark and nearby entrance will be closed from Monday 28 April and remain closed while works take place. The City Library will remain open and will be accessible from the Civic Centre Customer Services’ entry near Civic Park.

Please note that the City Library returns chute will be temporarily unavailable. A new Book Drop will be installed at the Cavenagh St side of the Civic Centre soon.

We kindly ask all customers to:

  • return items inside the Library during opening hours, or
  • use one of the 24/7 return chutes located at Casuarina, Nightcliff or Karama libraries.

For more information about the project, please go here.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

29 The Mall Darwin City

The Mall is the central hub of the central business district (CBD) where locals and visitors can shop for Aboriginal art, locally made jewellery and tropical clothing. You can also enjoy the cool ambience relaxing at one of the many alfresco cafes. Shady Raintree Park at the northern end is popular with tourists and locals at lunchtime and many outdoor events are held there during the Dry Season.

Halfway down The Mall is one of Darwin’s oldest pubs: the former Victoria Hotel, a landmark and heritage building. Opposite is the Star Village Arcade, which used to house the old open-air Star Theatre.

The stucco arched façade of the former Commercial Bank now graces the Paspaley Pearls building, the world renowned company specialising in the cultivation and sale of quality south sea pearls.

Follow the historical information plaques up The Mall and learn some interesting facts about the “Great hurricane” that struck Darwin in 1897, the arrival of the first Chinese people in 1874, and the discovery of pearl shell in Darwin harbour in 1884.

Permits

As a shared commercial and community space, some activities in The Mall may require a permit. Permits are available for busking, out-trading, displays or promotions. Please contact the Customer Service team on 08 8930 0300 to discuss your requirements.
