City of Darwin's 2025/26 Environment & Climate Change Grants are now closed for applications. The next round will open in April 2026.
City of Darwin allocates $50,000 each year to support local environmental initiatives under its Environment & Climate Change funding program. Our annual Environment & Climate Change Grants round opens in April each year. Applications are welcome from local community groups, not for profit organisations, research organisations and businesses.
Grant priorities
City of Darwin prioritises projects that:
- Contribute to achieving one or more actions within the City of Darwin 2030 Climate Emergency Strategy, Greening Darwin Strategy and/or Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.
- Deliver positive and measurable environmental outcomes for the City of Darwin and the Darwin community.
- Are innovative and sustainable initiatives.
Grant criteria
Applications must:
- Identify which strategy actions will be addressed.
- Demonstrate how the identified strategy actions will be addressed and how outcomes will be measured.
- Explain how the initiative will provide environmental benefits to the Darwin community.
How to apply
- Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the City of Darwin Environment Team to discuss their proposed application prior to submission. Get in touch with the team at environment@darwin.nt.gov.au or 08 8930 0300.
- Applicants should refer to the City of Darwin Funding Guidelines prior to submission.
- Applications must be submitted online through the City of Darwin's SmartyGrants page.
- Activities need to be completed within 12 months of the grant being awarded.
- Contracts will stipulate ownership of data to be held by or shared with City of Darwin.

Projects that were supported through the most recent Environment & Climate Change Grant rounds are listed below:
2025/26:
- Darwin Community Arts for their proposal to deliver a series of free community workshops aimed at building climate resilience and improving natural disaster preparedness tailored to the Darwin context.
- Waste Energy Benefits Us who will expand waste separation at Nightcliff Market through introducing volunteer-monitored bin stations and process the compostable packaging and organic wastes received with a new shredder and worm farm at Lakeside Drive Community Garden.
- Charles Darwin University will undertake research into Darwin’s native climbing plants, with the goal of enhancing biodiversity and increasing canopy cover in both natural and built environments.
2024/25:
- Lakeside Drive Community Garden - delivering ‘Growing with the Seasons’ community workshops based on the Gulumoerrgin seasonal calendar for planting, growing and cooking in Darwin, as well as sessions focused on biodiversity, art and culture.
- Territory Native Plants - delivering an NT Native Eco Fair at Jingili Watergardens, including informational stalls, walks and talks focused on biodiversity and greening as well as native plant sales.
- Waste Energy Benefits - implementing a reusable foodware, seating and commercial dishwashing setup at Parap Market to reduce single‐use packaging waste.
