Evidence shows a strong relationship between liquor outlet density and alcohol related harms. The Northern Territory has the highest density and diversity of liquor outlets in Australia. While Council is not directly responsible for liquor licensing, we are able to advocate in a range of ways to reduce alcohol harms within the Municipality. This includes making submissions to the Director-General of Licensing NT (and other regulatory and statutory bodies) in the interest of community amenity and safety.
In line with Federal and Territory Government harm minimisation strategies, we will continue to advocate for supply reduction and to minimise harm by reducing levels of public intoxication across Darwin, and support our sector partners to achieve this outcome.
City of Darwin is also actively involved in the development and support for Liquor Accords for the Darwin area. Liquor Accords are voluntary, alcohol industry-based partnerships in local communities that work to develop practical solutions to alcohol related problems.
