Three Green Sea Turtles (Doedleera)

As part of an upgrade in 2026 of the Casuarina Library's Children’s Space, bright decals adorn the walls featuring designs by Larrakia artist Taleena Lui-Villaflor from her work Three Green Sea Turtles (Doedleera). Three Green Sea Turtles is about doedleera (turtles) finding their way back to family and country after traveling. Taleena describes the work as being about staying strong in culture.

City of Darwin has worked with Doedleera across several projects, including in the Civic Centre foyer and for the Dalay Reading Club branding across our libraries; a program dedicated to developing young local book lovers.

Our Creative Strategy 2024 - 2030 aligns with and builds upon the strategic direction for a vibrant and creative city. One of three focus areas, Celebrating Larrakia, aims to elevate Larrakia stories, culture and creativity across our city.

Meet the Artist

Taleena Lui-Villaflor is a proud descendant of the Larrakia people, the traditional owners of the Darwin region. She began creating art from a young age, learning many designs and styles from her grandmother June Mills. 
 
Taleena is involved in projects for young people through the Larrakia Nation Family and Culture Centre, where she shares her knowledge, art, style and designs. As a Cultural Educator, she also facilitates workshops for young people. She has experience creating designs for public art projects for a range of local service providers including City of Darwin's Arts and Cultural Development Team.
