City of Darwin Libraries hosts welcoming book clubs for adults who enjoy lively discussion and exploring new authors. Each club meets monthly at different branches, with small groups led by staff or guest facilitators.
Book Clubs are a great way to meet new friends, connect with books, discover new authors, and discuss favourite literary moments and characters.
The Library facilitates a number of Adult Book Clubs and can provide administrational support to Independent Book Clubs.
How it works
Participants read a set book before the session. Meetings include guided discussion and social time.
Our book clubs meet monthly and are assisted by a library staff member. There is a maximum of 10 people per group.

Independent Book Clubs
We love supporting book clubs across our community! Whether you’re starting a new group or have been meeting for years, we’re here to help you find great reads.
We can assist with:
- Finding a library space to hold the meetings
- Club reading recommendations
- Finding titles that we have multiple copies of.

Borrowing Books for Your Club
Our Collection Development team keeps a special list of titles that have multiple copies available for book clubs to borrow. This list is updated annually, but please note that over time some copies may become unavailable due to loss or damage.
To give everyone the best chance of getting the books they want, we recommend reserving your titles at least three months in advance. This allows time for copies to be returned, processed, and sent out across our libraries.
Things to Keep in Mind
-
Availability can vary – sometimes it’s a matter of luck and patience.
-
Plan ahead – most successful clubs work to a schedule several months out.
-
Digital options – if you need something sooner, check out the “Always Available” shelf on our digital library Libby, which offers many eBook and eAudiobook titles ready to borrow instantly.
We’re excited to support your reading journey – happy discussing, debating, and discovering!
