Waste education for Darwin
The Shoal Bay Education Centre provides a space for students and the community to learn about waste management, recycling and resource recovery in Darwin through engaging programs and real-world experiences.
Located at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility (next to the Reviva Reuse Shop), the Education Centre currently offers waste education sessions and behind-the-scenes bus tours to Darwin schools, and community open days for the general public.
Focus areas for our waste education program include:
- Reducing household waste
- Maximising reuse and recycling
- Building a circular economy
- Understanding waste and resource recovery initiatives at Shoal Bay
City of Darwin is committed to being recognised as a clean and environmentally responsible city. Our aim is to reduce waste going to landfill by 50 per cent and to grow the circular economy in Darwin. Community education is key to achieving these objectives.
Register Your Interest – City of Darwin Waste Education Program
City of Darwin is inviting Darwin primary and secondary schools to register their interest in our free waste education program, designed to help students understand how we manage waste and why it matters, including practical ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Schools can participate through one or both of the following options:
1. Interactive Waste Education Sessions - Provide an insight into how Darwin’s waste is managed at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, while exploring practical ways to reduce waste, reuse resources and recycle correctly at home. Sessions include interactive activities and a visit to the Reuse Shop to encourage students to think about everyday choices when it comes to waste.
2. Behind-the-scenes Bus Tours at Shoal Bay - Provide an opportunity to see first-hand how Darwin’s waste is managed. Tours showcase landfill operations, resource recovery activities and environmental management.
Delivery
Interactive waste education sessions can be delivered as an excursion to Shoal Bay or as a classroom session. Schools will be required to arrange their own bus transport for Shoal Bay based excursions.
Bookings are available throughout the school year.
