Cycling in Darwin
Darwin’s warm climate and beautiful routes make cycling a preferred mode of transport. Whether you choose on-road cycling or shared paths, it's important to follow safety guidelines.
Shared Paths
In the Northern Territory, all bike paths and footpaths are shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists, with pedestrians having the right of way. E-scooters and bikes offer a sustainable and efficient way to get around Darwin, but as their use increases, safety remains a priority. When using these paths:
- Give way to pedestrians and pass them at a safe speed.
- Slow down and alert pedestrians when approaching from behind, using a bell or calling out.
- Keep left unless overtaking.
- Ride at a safe and considerate speed, especially in high-traffic areas.

On-Road Cycling Rules
Cyclists riding on the road are considered vehicles and must:
- Obey all road rules.
- Ride predictably and use hand signals when turning or stopping.
- Keep left - Stay as close as practical to the left side of the lane.
- Be visible by using lights at night or in low-visibility conditions.
- Wear an approved helmet.
