Compost Bin Rebate for City of Darwin Households  

City of Darwin is offering a compost bin rebate of up to $100 to Darwin households for the purchase of a home composting bin from a local NT supplier. Eligible products include standard compost bins (upright or tumbler) or bokashi composting systems (suitable for smaller households or apartments).

• You purchased a standard home compost bin or bokashi system from a local NT business and have retained a valid receipt.

I live in an apartment or unit, what home composting option could work for me?

A bokashi composting system is a good option for apartments or homes with limited outdoor space. Bokashi systems use an airtight bucket and a special microbe-inoculated bran to ferment food waste anaerobically. All kitchen scraps including meat, dairy and cooked food can be added. The fermented liquid can be diluted and used to water plants, or safely go down the drain, while the fermented waste needs to be buried (e.g. in pot plants, community gardens, your backyard). 

Can I purchase my compost bin online?

Yes. Online purchases are eligible as long as the supplier is a local NT business and you can provide a valid receipt. Postage and delivery costs are not covered by the rebate.

If I buy an $80 compost bin, can I receive the full $100 rebate?

No. The rebate is for a purchase of up to $100 (including GST). If your purchase is less than $100, you will be reimbursed for the purchase price. If your purchase price is more than $100, you will be reimbursed $100 only.
