Definition
Election advertising refers to advertising signs displayed in connection with Federal, Territory, or Local Government elections, a referendum, or a poll that is administered by the Territory or Commonwealth Electoral Commission.
Do I need a permit?
Permits are not required for election signs that comply with the following:
Election signs on private property
Election signs may be placed on private property provided they:
- are placed no earlier than six weeks before an election and removed one day after the election, subject to any requirements under the electoral act
- do not obstruct the view of vehicles and/or pedestrians
- do not exceed an area of 1.5m2
- are not illuminated or animated.
Election signs on City of Darwin road verges
Election signs may be temporarily placed on a City of Darwin verge provided they:
- are not attached to any trees or vegetation
- are not attached to any City of Darwin assets such as buildings, fences and signs
- do not damage City of Darwin or private infrastructure such as irrigation systems
- do not obstruct the view or flow of traffic for vehicles or pedestrians
- are safe, secure and under effective control  Â
- do not exceed an area of 1.5m2
- are not illuminated or animated.
City of Darwin may remove election signs from verges:
- if an adjoining landowner lodges a complaint
- if a sign does not comply with any of the above.
Election signs on Northern Territory Government (NTG) roads
Most roads in the Darwin municipality are controlled by the City of Darwin, while some roads are controlled by the Northern Territory Government (NTG). Election signs placed on NTG roads are to comply with the NTG Election Signage Policy.Â
