Councillor Clarence McCarthy-Grogan

Clarence is a born and bred Darwin local, he’s also a proud Yanyuwa & Garrawa man from Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria and a proud Kuku Yalanji man from Far North Queensland. 

Clarence was born with a physical disability called Fibula Limb Deficiency which impacts both his legs and requires him to use an everyday wheelchair. He is also an Australian wheelchair basketball representative, 3x Australian National Champion (Darwin Salties Wheelchair Basketball (2023, 2024, 2025), (2021) National NAIDOC & (2021) Darwin NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year), NT Young Achiever of the Year Sports person (2023), 3x U.S. College Champion (2016, 2020 & 2022) Finals MVP (2022). 

Clarence has his Bachelor of Science in University Studies and Minor Certificate in Disability Studies from his time at college in the U.S., and he has also played wheelchair basketball professionally in Spain and Germany. He has a background of working with youth, at risk youth, people with disability and all abilities. He is also a sports coach, mentor, motivational speaker, and advocate for people with disability.

At the end of the day, Clarence is all about community grassroots-level opportunities for everyone in the community and wants to help the city of Darwin become more accessible and inclusive for everyone.
