Under City of Darwin By-laws 2023 (37) the owner or occupier of premises must not allow the following on their property:
- Keep rubbish or discarded goods in open areas on the premises; or
- Allow the premises to:
- Become overgrown with vegetation; or
- attract reptiles or vermin; or
- be a fire hazard
Upon becoming aware of an unsafe or cluttered premises Council rangers will inspect the property, and the ranger will discuss with the owner/occupier actions required.
If the property is deemed to be satisfactory no further action will be taken.
If the work has not been carried out, Council will arrange for the work to be completed, and the costs will be passed on to the property owner.

Public housing properties
