Darwin’s laneways and small streets provide opportunities for activities that add interest, support local businesses and contribute to a vibrant and welcoming city.

Whether you are considering busking, commercial activity, an event or another temporary use of public space, there may be approvals or requirements to consider.

Getting started

Most activities on City of Darwin land require approval. Use the options below to find information about your proposed activity, including relevant permits, requirements and how to apply.

Events

Laneways and small streets can provide a unique setting for events, from live music and performances to markets and other community activities. Their smaller scale and urban setting can create a distinctive atmosphere and offer a different experience to traditional event venues.

If you are planning an event in one of these spaces, consider how the location may affect access, infrastructure, traffic, safety and surrounding businesses and residents.

 

Outdoor Dining

Outdoor dining and business activations

Laneways and small streets can provide opportunities for businesses to extend their activity into the public space, from outdoor dining to pop-up events, functions, gallery openings and other temporary activations.

If you are planning a one-off or pop-up event, submit an Event Application.

If you are seeking ongoing use of the space, such as outdoor dining or regular business activity, apply through Commercial Activities.

Street Art

Many of Darwin’s laneways and small streets already have some amazing Street Art. This creative artform adds vibrancy to an often-dull environment and not only attracts visitation but creates a funky new vibe. If you’d like to find out more about murals and street art, contact City of Darwin on 8930 0300.

Busking & Street Performance

‘Busking’ and ‘Street Performing’ can mean performing music, dance, or street theatre in a public space. These activities can be conducted in all City of Darwin owned public spaces and commercial areas including malls, footpaths, and parks throughout Darwin. Conditions do apply and a permit is required.

Activation Zones

Creative spaces exist all over Darwin municipality. Two popular and well resources locations are Austin Lane and Smith Street Mall.
