The myDarwin economic stimulus is an initiative to provide support to local businesses and community residents through digital discounts. It was designed for local businesses in retail, tourism, and hospitality who were affected by closures, social distancing measures, and restricted hours of trade-related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program supported the local businesses by encouraging community residents to register through the app, visit participating businesses and enjoy discounts. The successful program was rolled out across 7 rounds during the months of June, July, December 2020, and January 2021 injecting over $6.2 Million into the local economy.
myDarwin attracted over 410 businesses and 41,000 registered users. The program was funded by both the City of Darwin contributing $650,000 and the Northern Territory Government an additional $400,000.
The program was licensed in-kind to the Northern Territory Government to support other local government associations including the City of Palmerston, Litchfield, Katherine, Barkley Region, and Alice Springs in late 2020. The Darwin-built program also reached other territories including the Australian Capital Territory with their own rendition of the program titled “Choose CBR”.
