Each year, City of Darwin invites the community to nominate an Australian citizen who has made a meaningful contribution to local life, whether over the past year or through ongoing efforts. Contributions can be in any area, including education, health, fundraising, volunteering, business, sport, the arts, culture or the environment. 

These awards, held as part of Australia Day celebrations, honour those who go above and beyond to support, uplift and grow the Darwin community. Whether through volunteering, leadership, creativity or community spirit, now is the time to acknowledge their impact. 

You can nominate deserving locals in the following categories: 

• Citizen of the Year: For an exceptional Australian citizen who has made a lasting contribution to their community.  

2025 winner: Donna Roushman was recognised for her impactful work in the field of inclusive swimming after she formed the Starfish Swim Group in 2005, providing specialised swimming instruction for children with special needs. 

• Young Citizen of the Year: For a passionate young person under 30 creating positive change and making a significant contribution to their community.  

2025 winner: Peter Susanto established Peter’s Little Library, a free mini library where everyone could borrow, swap or donate books, and is a member of the Northern Territory Association for the Education of the Gifted and Talented. 

• Community Activity of the Year: For a standout event, initiative, or activity that brought people together and made a real impact.  

2025 Winner: Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta which has made several important contributions to the community over the past 50 years, raising significant funds for local charities, including assisting the Men’s Shed Palmerston in purchasing a new shed and contributing to St John Ambulances purchasing two new ambulances. 

“These awards celebrate the heart of our city, its people,” said City of Darwin CEO Simone Saunders. “Your nomination could help shine a light on someone whose efforts deserve to be recognised.”
