City of Darwin is offering free evening parking and extended opening hours at the West Lane Car Park during the 2026 Darwin Festival, making it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy the city's biggest annual event.
Normally open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, seven days a week, the West Lane Car Park will remain open later on key festival dates, with free parking available from 7:00 pm until closing at 11:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10:30 pm on Sundays.
Extended opening hours are:
- Friday 7, 14 and 21 August: Open until 11:00 pm (free from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm)
- Saturday 8, 15 and 22 August: Open until 11:00 pm (free from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm)
- Sunday 9 and 16 August: Open until 10:30 pm (free from 7:00 pm to 10:30 pm)
The extended hours coincide with Darwin Festival, one of the Northern Territory's premier arts and cultural events, bringing thousands of people into the city during August.
Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Jimmy Bouhoris, said the initiative would make it easier for people to visit the CBD during one of Darwin's biggest festival events.
"Darwin Festival is one of our city's signature events, attracting thousands of people into the CBD to experience world-class performances, local talent and our vibrant hospitality precinct," Councillor Bouhoris said.
"With parking availability currently reduced due to construction of the new Civic Centre, we wanted to provide another convenient and safe option for people travelling into the city.
"By extending the opening hours of the West Lane Car Park and offering free parking from 7.00 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sundays, we're making it easier for people to enjoy the festival while also supporting our local businesses," he said.
City of Darwin reminds motorists that vehicles must be removed before the advertised closing time each night. An early release fee will apply if vehicle access is required outside the published operating hours.
