City of Darwin is making it easier for Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members to access information and services through a new trial of Convo Access, an on-demand Auslan interpreting service.
Delivered in partnership with Convo Access, an Australian deaf-owned organisation, the service connects Auslan users with qualified interpreters in real time through a simple video call.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the initiative was another step towards creating a more accessible and inclusive city for everyone.
"Everyone should be able to access City of Darwin services with confidence and ease," Mr Styles said.
"This online service will help remove communication barriers by providing Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members with real-time access to qualified Auslan interpreters when they visit participating City of Darwin facilities.
"We're committed to improving accessibility across our municipality, and this trail will help us better understand how technology can enhance the way we deliver services to our community," he said.
Using Convo Access is simple, visitors scan a QR code using their smartphone or tablet to instantly connect with a qualified Auslan interpreter, who facilitates communication between the customer and City of Darwin staff.
The six-month trial will run from July to December 2026 and supports the priorities outlined in City of Darwin's Access Strategy 2025–2030, including improving participation, communication and access to services for people with disability.
Community feedback and usage data collected throughout the trial will help determine whether the service is introduced permanently at City of Darwin locations.
Convo Access is available during the trial at the following locations:
- Casuarina Library
- Casuarina Pool
- Civic Centre Customer Service
- Darwin City Library
- Karama Library
- Nightcliff Library
- Nightcliff Pool
- Operations Centre Customer Service
- Parap Pool
- Youth Programs
- City of Darwin Events
- Rangers
The service will also be available at selected City of Darwin events and youth programs throughout the trial period.
