Darwin residents are invited to help create a greener city at a community planting day at Bagot Park this Saturday, 21 September 2024.
City of Darwin Chief Executive Officer Simone Saunders said the planting day provided a great opportunity for the community to get together and contribute to the ongoing improvement of Bagot Park.
“Bagot Park is a valuable open space that has been used for recreation since the 1960’s,” Ms Saunders said.
“The planting day contributes to the Bagot Park Master Plan, which was created after considerable community engagement and captures the long-term vision for the area.
“One of the guiding principles of the master plan was to create a cool, green park that provides improved habitat, shading, cooling and plant diversity, and the community planting day will assist in achieving these goals.
“We have already made considerable improvements at Bagot Park, including providing diverse recreational opportunities and increased connections, and it is great to see even more greening take place,” she said.
The community planting day is one of City of Darwin’s Better Suburbs projects, which aims to improve community infrastructure and beautify Darwin streetscapes.
Over 50 native trees will be planted and holes have been pre-drilled to make it easy for people to take part.
Sunscreen, gloves and cold water will be provided and there will be staff onsite to assist. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hat and enclosed shoes.
The planting day will run from 8am and will take place in the area between the new car park and Sabine Road.
