Over the past five days, City of Darwin has undertaken a substantial recovery effort in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Fina. 

Contractors and staff have made significant progress across the municipality as they continue to restore essential services and clear an estimated 170,000 tonnes of cyclone-related green waste. 

Since Sunday 23 November, our Emergency Operations Centre team has received more around 400 calls from residents reporting cyclone impact across the municipality – this equates to 24 hours of total talk time. As of today, Friday 28 November, the team have logged more than 900 jobs which are assigned a priority rating - around 500 of these were tree related.  

The scale of recovery work is extensive as City of Darwin manages approximately 90% of the Darwin road network equating to 475km of roads. In addition to the 221 parks, 630km of footpaths and walkways, 22,000 driveways, 150 playgrounds, 19 sporting ovals and 590 hectares of green space.  

All City of Darwin libraries and pools will be open over the weekend, while most ovals, sports fields, parks, and reserves remain closed awaiting further assessments.  

Lord Mayor Peter Styles thanks the community for its patience and acknowledges they are eager to return to City of Darwin ovals, parks and reserves. 

“Cyclone Fina has had a significant impact on our city and we expect this clean-up will take a couple of months. 

“We are asking everyone to be patient and give our crews the space they work through the asset priority list and clearing of our streets, verges and community spaces,” he said. 

Mr Styles encouraged families to explore the many activities happening across the municipality while some of the Council’s outdoor areas remain closed over the weekend. 
“There’s plenty to do this weekend from Santa’s Village at The Galleria on Smith Street, to Parap Markets on Saturday or sunset at the Nightcliff Foreshore.”  

“We appreciate everyone’s understanding, and we’ll continue to share updates as they’re available,” he added. 

Residents are reminded that both Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility and the green waste Hidden Valley site are open this weekend.

General Waste 

Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility is open for general waste only (no green waste), which includes: 

• food waste 
• unwanted household items  
• Cardboard 
• hard waste such as mattresses   

Reviva Reuse Shop at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility is also open.  

Kerbside bin collections  

Recycling and general waste kerbside bin collections are operating as normal; however, some delays may occur while we manage increased demand and navigate road closures.  

Green Waste 

Residents can continue to take their green waste to a free, alternative emergency waste management site at Hidden Valley between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm daily.
