City of Darwin’s free annual hard rubbish clean-up starts in Zone 2 next week, with convoys moving through suburbs from Monday 21 September.
Hard rubbish collection is a great way to get rid of unwanted items in the lead up to the cyclone season.
City of Darwin asked residents to separate items into like piles, including electrical, whitegoods, timber, scrap metal, cardboard and e-waste, with items identified as recyclable taken directly to HPA. All items will be collected at once leaving verges clear.
Green waste is NOT part of the clean-up, nor are liquids, paint, glass, tyres or car parts and residents who do leave these items out for collection will be issued with a written notice to advise why these items have not been picked up.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis encouraged residents to separate items.
“This is a terrific service offered to Darwin residents and we ask that they please take the time to separate items.”
“Many separated items can be reused or recycled, however items that aren’t separated may be contaminated and taken to landfill, which is not our preferred course of action.”
“Once the convoys have visited a street they are unable to retrace their path so I encourage residents to have their hard rubbish out the day before collection starts.”
“City of Darwin is committed to reducing, reusing and recycling and has a number of initiatives in place to reduce our CO2 emissions and divert material from landfill, including using recycled asphalt on roads, diverting metal waste from landfill and incorporating sustainable principals into major contracts.”
Zone 2 – Items out by Sunday 20 September - Bayview, Coconut Grove, Darwin City, Fannie Bay, Larrakeyah, Ludmilla, Millner, Nightcliff, Parap, Rapid Creek, Stuart Park, The Gardens, The Narrows and Woolner.
City of Darwin can assist seniors or residents with mobility limitations who are unable to put their items out for collection. Please email email@example.com for assistance.
