City of Darwin’s popular native plant giveaway continues this dry season, with over 2000 free native plants available for Darwin residents on Saturday 14 June 2025.
The giveaway will take place at the Mindil Beach Market carpark area, across form Gardens Oval on Gilruth Avenue.
Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the initiative supports Council’s commitment to a cooler, greener and more sustainable city.
“Greening our municipality is a key priority, and this financial year we’re on track to distribute more than 15,000 native plants through our giveaways,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“Native plants are vital in creating resilient landscapes – they reduce erosion, improve soil stability, and provide critical habitat for native wildlife such as birds, frogs and lizards.
“By choosing local species, residents are not only supporting the environment but also reducing water use, lowering garden maintenance, and enhancing biodiversity,” he said.
All plants have been selected to suit Darwin’s tropical climate, with a wide range of native trees, shrubs and grasses on offer.
The giveaway will take place from 8am to 11am and is open to Darwin residents only.
Each household may collect up to six plants, and proof of residency is required.
