All cats and dogs three months or older must be registered. The owners of a dog or cat who fail to register their animal may be liable to a fine. A child’s dog or cat must be registered in the parent’s or guardian’s name. Registration for dogs and cats expire on the 31 August each year.

Darwin pet owners are encouraged to adhere to five principles of pet ownership:

• Register and microchip your pets.

• Desex your pets.

• Provide Training, socialization and care for your animals including health care.

• Do not allow your animal to become a threat or a nuisance in the community. 

• Prepare your pets for emergencies. 

When owning an animal, it is understood that certain requirements should be met to ensure the animal is kept safe and healthy. The following are some considerations to practising responsible pet ownership:

• Managing the pet to prevent nuisance behaviour.

• Taking appropriate steps should verified complaints be made.

• Meeting the requirements for the animal’s health and well-being.

• Providing continued physical and mental exercise and stimulation for your animals.

• Walking pets on a leash in public spaces.

• Educating the family to care for the animal.

• Keeping the animal’s vaccinations up to date and seek veterinary assistance when required.

• Watching your pet when in the presence of children or strangers.

• Collecting faeces and dispose of in a sanitary manner.

• Continuing the training and socialisation process.

• Ensuring your animal is appropriately contained.
