Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility
Cell ¾ Capping
City of Darwin is required to cap the landfill cells within the Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility (SBWMF) to meet the requirements of City of Darwin’s Environmental Protection Licence for the site. The final capping of Stages 3 and 4 has been identified as the irrigation area for the Leachate Treatment facility at SBWMF. The final commissioning and operation of the Leachate Treatment facility relies upon the completion of the final capping. The capping of Stages 3 and 4 of the landfill has been brought forward to the 2020/21 financial year to accommodate the proposed leachate treatment system for the landfill.
The project involves:
• The reprofiling of the landfill
• Construct lining system:
• Subgrade layer
• Passive landfill gas collection system
• Coated Geosynthetic Clay Liner - Capping/Barrier Layer
• Reinforcing geogrid
• Subsurface drainage system
• Cover soil layer
The proposed project presents a unique and innovative approach to solving the current and future issues created by leachate generation within the SBWMF landfill. By integrating the Leachate Treatment system into the final landfill cap of Stages 3 and 4, cost savings have been achieved in the initial capital expenditure and the ongoing operational and monitoring expenditure for the facility.
