Installation of Speed Check Signs Around Darwin Schools
We are pleased to advise that as a road safety initiative, City of Darwin will soon be installing Speed Check signs around various schools within the Darwin municipality and Wanguri Primary School has been selected to have two Speed Check signs installed on Wanguri Terrace.
Speed Check signs are electronic traffic calming devices which are capable of recording and displaying vehicle speeds and flashing a ‘slow down’ message when a set speed is exceeded. The signs will be programmed to display this messaging during school zone hours when the 40km/h speed limit is exceeded.
We are intending to install the signs on Wanguri Terrace adjacent no. 56 and opposite no. 48. These locations have been identified based on traffic count and crash data, as well as the hierarchy of the City of Darwin owned road network in the vicinity of the School. The location will also be verified from a road safety perspective by a Road Safety Audit. The electronic speed signs will consist of a concrete footing, signpost, electronic sign face and solar panels. An image of a similar sign is attached on the page overleaf for your information.
The installation of the signs commenced in June 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of September 2022.
The purpose of this project is to encourage safer driving behaviour through school zones as an education measure, ultimately improving road safety around schools.
This project is funded on a 50:50 basis by City of Darwin and the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program 2021/22. This funding is strictly for speed check signs.
