City of Darwin’s Waters Ward Elected Members are inviting local families to celebrate Father’s Day early with a free evening of family entertainment and an outdoor movie at Anula Oval on Saturday 5 September 2026.

From 4.30pm, families can enjoy face painting, a petting zoo, sports activities and competitions before settling in under the stars for a free screening of Australian family favourite Paper Planes from 6.30pm.

Waters Ward Councillor Kim Farrar said the event was a great opportunity to bring the community together and celebrate Father’s Day.

“We’ve been moving our Waters Ward community events around different suburbs, giving different parts of the ward the opportunity to host and get involved,” Councillor Farrar said.

“We’ve held events in Karama and Malak, and this time we’re bringing the celebration to Anula.

“The Father’s Day event is a great opportunity for people to come together, meet their neighbours, invite their friends along and enjoy a fantastic community event.

“I encourage everyone to come along, get involved in the activities and enjoy a movie under the stars with the community,” she said.

There will be plenty of chances to get involved, with three-legged, egg and spoon and stilts races, while the Fun Bus will host a Father’s Day card-making activity and a drawing competition.

Golf NT and Garuda Football Club will be on hand to provide sporting activities for the whole family and Garuda Football Club will also run the community BBQ.
City of Darwin will be giving away native plants and sharing information about local environment and waste programs.

Anula Oval is home to one of Darwin’s largest regional playgrounds, with a flying fox, climbing structures, swings and a sand play area providing plenty of entertainment for children before the movie.

Paper Planes follows 12-year-old Dylan as he discovers a talent for making paper planes and pursues his dream of competing at the junior championships in Japan.
