City of Darwin is reminding pet owners that annual animal registration renewals are due soon, with all dogs and cats required to be registered by 1 September 2026.

Residents are encouraged to renew their pet's registration and check that their contact details are correct to help ensure lost animals can be returned home as quickly as possible.

Lord Mayor Peter Styles said maintaining accurate registration records was one of the simplest ways owners could protect their pets.

"Registration and microchipping are essential for identifying lost pets and reconnecting them with their families," Mr Styles said.

"If you live in the Darwin municipality, your dog or cat must be registered if they are older than three months or have lived in Darwin for three months or longer.

"If you've recently moved, changed your phone number or email address, or haven't received your renewal notice, there's a good chance your contact details need updating.

"Pets that aren't registered, or whose owner's details are no longer current, can be much harder to reunite with their families," he said.

Animal registrations expire on 31 August each year and must be renewed by 1 September each year.

Pet owners who register their pet or update their existing registration details before the end of August will go into the draw to win a $250 voucher for a local pet store.

Reduced registration fees are available for desexed cats and dogs, concession card holders and dogs that have completed recognised obedience training.

Pet owners who have not received a renewal notice are encouraged to contact City of Darwin to update their details and renew their registration.
