Celebrate the magic of the Northern Territory’s seasons with the Darwin Symphony Orchestra’s joyful end-of-year concert: a vibrant musical journey through renewal, wonder, and festivity. Inspired by the natural rhythms of the Top End, this program captures the spirit of the wet season, the sounds of Kakadu, and the joy of coming together through music.
The concert opens with Frog Voices/Frog Songs by DSO Artistic Director Richard Mills, a playful and evocative piece that brings to life the calls of frogs in Kakadu, echoing the vibrancy of the landscape. This is followed by the world premiere of I, Rain, a new work by Composer in Residence Netanela Mizrahi. Featuring young voices of Milkwood School Choir alongside the orchestra, this moving piece celebrates the healing power of the wet season and the emotional connection between people and place.
From nature’s rhythms, the program shifts into the world of fairy tales and festive colour. Humperdinck’s enchanting Hansel and Gretel capture the magic of childhood and storytelling, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve Suite sparkles with orchestral brilliance, evoking the shimmering beauty of winter celebrations.
To close the evening, the orchestra brings the festive spirit to life with Leroy Anderson’s beloved Sleigh Ride, a joyful classic that never fails to delight. The celebration continues with a garland of carols featuring by Darwin’s own choir, Vocalective, filling the hall with warmth, harmony, and holiday cheer.
