Gurambai Magical Mangroves 2.0
Artworks featured on a streetsweeper and amenity blocks at Jingili Water Gardens, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek foreshores and Bundilla Beach.
Gurambai Magical Mangroves is the guiding theme on a streetsweeper, and amenity block vinyl wrap artworks, featuring designs inspired by the local Gurambai (Rapid Creek) ecosystem.
Gurambai Magical Mangroves was created by the Free Space Studio, a program for local artists with disability run by Arts Access Darwin as part of Darwin Community Arts.
The collective first produced the Gurambai Magical Mangroves artworks for the Jingili Watergardens All Access Playground shade structures and the nearby amenity block (2019 – 2021). These designs later extended to other projects, including vinyl wraps on amenity blocks along the Nightcliff and Rapid Creek foreshore, at Bundilla Beach, and a street sweeper artwork wrap (2023).
Meet the Artist
Guided by Creative Producer Amina McConvell from Arts Access Darwin, artists took part in workshops to create the Gurambai Magical Mangroves designs. The artworks were originally integrated into the Jingili Watergardens All Access Playground shade cloth, the nearby amenity and accessible adult change facility, and most notably, the Green Ants Nest play space – a vibrant structure at the centre of the playground.
The Free Space Studio program, run by Arts Access Darwin, supports local artists with disability. It offers regular workshops, advocacy and professional opportunities, and has been operating for more than a decade. The program involves 18 artists.
The artists behind Gurambai Magical Mangroves are Abigail Marangurra, Angelique Martin, Joanne Van Roden, Samantha Callaghan, Tara Darcy and Wendy Lamble.
Their designs featured on amenity blocks along the Nightcliff and Rapid Creek foreshore, at Bundilla Beach, and on a street sweeper artwork wrap.
