City of Darwin is trialling the use of body worn cameras in November and December 2024. After this trial, we’ll make an operational decision whether to adopt the technology.
Why use body worn cameras?
Body worn cameras have been shown in several jurisdictions to significantly reduce occupational violence by encouraging mutually respectful and safe interactions between local government staff and members of the community.
In addition to crucial safety considerations, the use of body worn cameras has been shown to improve safety, accountability, and trust between local government frontline staff and the community.
Footage from body worn cameras serves as an impartial record that can protect both staff and community members in cases of complaints or incidents, which can help resolve disputes and misunderstandings.
The use of body worn cameras by frontline staff in law enforcement and in local government contexts is a well-established practice and has been in place for a long period of time.
What will City of Darwin do with the footage from body worn cameras?
All body worn camera footage is uploaded to a secure evidence system where it can only be accessed by authorised users.
Footage is subject to the same privacy principles and legislation as any other personal information collected by City of Darwin.
Can I request footage of myself?
Under the Information Act (2002) anyone can apply to access information from City of Darwin subject to a number of exemptions to protect public and private interests; this includes body worn camera footage.
