Waste education for Darwin
City of Darwin opened its Education Centre at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility in 2024. The Education Centre provides an opportunity for the community to learn about waste management and resource recovery in Darwin.
Focus areas for education will include information about:
- Reducing waste
- Maximising recycling
- the Northern Territory circular economy
- Shoal Bay’s best practice infrastructure
In 2025, the Education Centre is offering waste and recycling education sessions to Darwin primary schools, facility-wide bus tours to Darwin secondary schools, and a community open day to the general public.
City of Darwin has made a commitment to being recognised as a clean and environmentally responsible city. Over the next ten years, our aim is to reduce waste going to landfill by 50 per cent and grow the circular economy in Darwin. Community education is key to achieving these objectives.
