Waste education for Darwin
City of Darwin has now opened its Education Centre at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility. The Education Centre provides an opportunity for the community to learn about waste management and resource recovery in Darwin.
Focus areas for education will include information about:
- Reducing waste
- Maximising recycling
- the Northern Territory circular economy
- Shoal Bay’s best practice infrastructure
In 2024-25, the Education Centre will offer waste and recycling education sessions to Darwin primary schools, facility-wide bus tours to Darwin secondary schools, and a community open day to the general public.
City of Darwin has made a commitment to being recognised as a clean and environmentally responsible city. Over the next ten years, our aim is to reduce waste going to landfill by 50 per cent and grow the circular economy in Darwin. Community education is key to achieving these objectives.
Expressions of Interest - Waste & Recycling Education Sessions for Primary Schools

The sessions will be held at our newly opened Education Centre at Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility, with the first round offered from July 2024 to June 2025.
The sessions provide an insight into the operation of Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility and focus on ways to minimise household waste and recycling contamination. Developed in collaboration with KESAB Environmental Solutions and NT Recycling Solutions (NTRS), the sessions include interactive activities and interpretive signage to make waste education fun and engaging.
