Heart of Nightcliff

Heart of Nightcliff

Innovative screen designs drawing on local market food culture and the natural environment, created by local artist Sina O’Keeffe.

As part of the Nightcliff Village upgrade in 2023, Sina O’Keeffe’s designs were integrated into two large metal bin screening structures and fabricated and installed locally.

The Heart of Nightcliff series celebrates the connection between Nightcliff’s foreshore and its nearby commercial village. The artist invites viewers to imagine strolling past the iconic Nightcliff jetty and coastal Casuarina trees into the lively Nightcliff Village, where the weekly Sunday markets offer the aromas of freshly brewed coffee, local produce and foods from across Southeast Asia and beyond — a popular place to enjoy a laksa or noodle soup.

One screen celebrates coastal wildlife and flora of the local area. The second highlights the bustling Nightcliff Village weekend markets, with food items familiar to both locals and visitors.

Meet the Artist

As an illustrator, Sina draws inspiration from the surrounding ecology and wildlife. The artist combines photography and sketching before using digital tools to bring the designs to life.

Sina’s aim with Heart of Nightcliff was to capture the unique blend of coastal sanctuary and colourful community, enhancing the atmosphere of a place where residents and visitors connect and immerse themselves in the beauty and spirit of Nightcliff.
