Useful Information about Parking Infringements
The City of Darwin has a number of parking options throughout the city that include both on and off-street parking spaces. These parking spaces are designed in line with the Australian Road Rules to promote safe and easy access to the city. An infringement notice can be issued by an authorised officer for failing to comply with parking requirements or a breach of the Australian Road Rules.
It is the driver's responsibility to ensure their vehicle is parked in compliance with the City's parking regulations and the Australian Road Rules.
Infringements can also be issued for any of the following:
- Parking and other traffic regulations
- By-Law offences
- Animal control issues
- Littering.
Stages of an Infringement Notices

You receive an infringement notice on your vehicle, in person or in the mail. You have 14 days from the date of issue to pay the original penalty amount listed on the infringement or submit an infringement review.
*Please note, infringements are added into the City of Darwin system overnight and will be available to make payment the next business day. *

- Stage 2: Courtesy Letter

A courtesy letter will be issued after 14 days if no payment is received. The courtesy letter cost of $42.00 will be added to the original infringement amount. An additional 14 days is provided to pay the original infringement plus penalties before it is referred to the Fines Recovery Unit.

If you have received a courtesy notice for a parking infringement and you were not the driver, please fill in a Statutory Declaration and return to City of Darwin via email to darwin@darwin.nt.gov.au. A Change of Offender will be conducted to reissue the infringement into the responsible persons' name. If possible, please supply a Notice of Disposal when submitting the declaration.
- Stage 3: Infringement is referred to the Fines Recovery Unit

After 28 days, the infringement will be referred to the Fines Recovery Unit. Once an infringement has been lodged with the Fines Recovery Unit in accordance with the Fines and Penalties (Recovery) Act 2001 (NT), the City of Darwin has no authority to withdraw, amend, or manage the infringement. All matters relating to payment, enforcement, or review must be directed to the Fines Recovery Unit. If an enforcement order is made, further costs will be added to the amount due.
