People across the globe can now to listen in to stories about creationism, spiritual connection to country, and how Darwin’s Larrakia people navigate the traditional and Western worlds.
Lord Mayor Mr Kon Vatskalis said City of Darwin’s Saltwater Stories of the Larrakia podcast series featured prominent Larrakia personalities, including general practitioner Aleeta Fejo and businessman and ex-AFL star Daniel Motlop.
“It is wonderful to have a contemporary way to share the stories of the traditional custodians of the greater Darwin region, the Larrakia people,” Mr Vatskalis said.
“These podcasts will provide our community, visitors and international audiences with an insight into Darwin’s First Nations culture and history, which makes our city so unique.”
City of Darwin partnered with One Bird Consulting in the development of the podcasts, which also saw local creatives from SkinnyFish Music contributing to the soundtrack for the series, including talented emerging Larrakia artist Lena Kellie.
Senior Larrakia representative Dr Richard Fejo, who featured in the podcast series, said one of the major struggles facing Aboriginal people today was maintenance of culture.
“Our culture is taught to us from those that came before us and it’s our obligation to pass culture on,” Dr Fejo said.
“Stories of the land will change based on how that story was originally told and how it’s told today.
“It is crucial that we educate our community about our identities because that represents everything that we are.”
