What is a Parklet?
Parklets are temporary outdoor spaces that can be situated in on-street car parking bays in the Darwin municipality to create new spaces for commercial activation of the City of Darwin’s streetscape.
Parklets provide the opportunity to support local businesses while positively contributing to the broader community through the provision of seating and greenery, fostering the potential for neighbourhood interaction. The intent is for greater community activation and public amenity of on-street car parking bays.
Hosting A Parklet
City of Darwin is currently seeking expressions of interest from businesses that would like to host a parklet.
How Can I Apply?
Express your interest in a Parklet. If your business meets the selection criteria, you will qualify as a Parklet host.
Hosts will be assessed by a panel and successful applicants will be required to enter a licence agreement that details terms and conditions of the arrangement.
City of Darwin will install the Parklet in the designated location free of charge and you can commence using the Parklet immediately.
Who Can Apply?
Any business, property owner, or organisation can apply to host a Parklet if they have a parallel parking bay adjacent to their property, which is located on a City of Darwin road that has a speed limit 40km/h or less with street lighting.
Can I install my own Parklet?
Installing your own Parklet is an option. The design should be interesting and creative to enhance the streetscape character and must conform to the Building Code and Australian Standards.
Hosts are able to submit an application to install their own Parklet at any time via the Host Owned Parklet Application Form.
These parklets must meet the requirements outlined in the Host Owned Parklet Guidelines. Each Parklet application will be assessed by City of Darwin staff accordingly.
