Do you know what happens when your yellow lid recycling bin gets emptied? The recyclables don’t go to ‘the tip’ - they end up at the Materials Recovery Facility (affectionately known as ‘the merf’).
At the merf the items are sorted by hand and put through specialised machinery into recyclable types. The separated plastics, metals, paper and cardboard are then baled up for recycling into different products at other locations. And eventually, some of these new products made from recyclables will end up back in your home.
