City of Darwin invites the community to come together on Thursday 19 February to reflect on the city’s wartime history and resilience, marking the 84th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin.
On 19 February 1942, Darwin was struck by the largest air raid ever conducted on Australian soil. Over 680 bombs were dropped on the harbour, resulting in the loss of more than 230 lives, injuring over 400 people, and leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles acknowledged the profound significance of the day, highlighting its enduring place in Australia’s national story.
“The Bombing of Darwin stands as the largest foreign attack ever conducted on Australian soil, bringing devastating consequences for both service personnel and civilians,” Mr Styles said.
“We recognise this National Day of Observance as a way of honouring survivors and victims in this significant moment in Australia's history.
“The bravery of the people of Darwin during these events will never be forgotten.”
In the months before the attack, the Australian Government ordered the evacuation of the city’s civilian population. Families were uprooted and faced significant hardship and uncertainty.
“The courage of those who defended Darwin, and the strength of those who rebuilt their lives in the aftermath, will always be honoured,” he said.
Mr Styles encourages residents and visitors to participate in the commemorative events on 19 February.
“Whether you have been part of the Darwin community for many years, recently arrived, or are visiting for the first time, this day offers the opportunity to reflect on the city’s history, shaping it into the city it is today.”
