Darwin residents can take home free native plants and learn more about creating gardens that green our city and support local wildlife, when the Top End Eco Fair returns to Jingili Watergardens on Saturday 22 August.
City of Darwin is a proud sponsor of the event, which is delivered by Territory Native Plants and Landcare NT.
More than 2,000 native plants will be available for free from City of Darwin, giving residents an opportunity to add native species to their gardens.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the event was a great opportunity for residents to learn more about Darwin’s natural environment.
“The Top End Eco Fair is a fantastic opportunity for our community to connect with local experts and discover simple ways we can support biodiversity in our own backyards,” Mr Styles said.
“We’re looking forward to giving away native plants, connecting with residents at City of Darwin’s stall and sharing the knowledge of our staff through educational talks and guided walks.
“Our tropical environment is one of the things that makes Darwin such a special place, and events such as this help strengthen our connection with the plants, wildlife and ecosystems that make our city home,” he said.
City of Darwin staff will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions about greening and biodiversity, including City of Darwin’s work to protect and enhance the environment.
Attendees can hear directly from City of Darwin staff during the event’s program of garden talks, including:
- Benefits of Native Landscapes - exploring the benefits of native gardens and how City of Darwin is embedding biodiversity into parks and streetscapes.
- Caring for Native Plants – understanding nutrients, fertiliser and mulching.
- Gardens for Wildlife - sharing information about creating habitat for native wildlife in backyards.
City of Darwin staff will also contribute to the guided walks program, sharing their knowledge of Top End plants and their uses alongside other local experts.
The Top End Eco Fair brings together local environmental organisations, experts and the community for a day of place-based learning, creative workshops, interactive displays, plant sales, wildlife encounters, kids’ activities, information stalls, guided walks and talks.
The free, family-friendly event will be held from 8.30am to 3pm on Saturday 22 August at Jingili Watergardens, Freshwater Road, Jingili.
